Why Did Lord Brahma Curse Sage Vasistha? | Yoga Vasistha S2 EP-13

How did self-knowledge descend to earth? Discover why Lord Brahma cursed his mind-born son Sage Vasistha with ignorance and how supreme truth dawned.

Just as a single sun reflects across countless water bodies as many suns, the one indivisible Brahman appears divided into ‘you’, ‘I’, and ‘he’ due to the perceptual conditioning of the observer.

Where does the ultimate end to human suffering, the oscillations of joy and sorrow, and the relentless cycle of birth and death lie? How can one emerge from the darkness of ignorance and attain everlasting peace? How did self-knowledge originally descend into this mortal world? Why did the creator himself, Lord Brahma, curse his own mind-born son, Sage Vasistha, with a restless mind? The answers to these profound questions unfold in this magnificent chapter of the Yoga Vasistha: the ‘Descent of Knowledge’ (Jnana Avatarana).

As he imparts supreme self-knowledge to Sri Rama, Sage Vasistha unveils the secrets of creation, the nature of Supreme Brahman, and the wondrous account of his own origin through lucid insights and compelling analogies.

The Nature of Brahman: What Is the Truth at the Source of Creation?

Seated in the royal assembly, Sage Vasistha turned to Sri Rama and commenced the transmission of self-knowledge.

“O Sri Rama! The ultimate foundation of all creation—Brahman—is self-luminous. It requires no external light to shine; it illumines by its own inherent nature. That reality is indefinable, beyond description, and completely transcends human thought and speech. Manifesting as Sat-Chit-Ananda (Existence-Consciousness-Bliss), that Supreme Brahman pervades every corner of existence. In truth, it is solely through the presence of this supreme reality that all beings and objects in the cosmos appear to exist.

That very Brahman is known in the unfolding of time as Niyati (the ordaining cosmic law or destiny). The underlying cause and effect behind everything that occurs in this universe is nothing other than Supreme Brahman.

The Analogy of the Mirror and the Sun: Here, a fundamental doubt arises: if everything is that one Brahman, why do countless millions of distinct creatures and diverse objects appear throughout creation? Vasistha provided an illuminating analogy.

“Just as a reflection appears within a mirror, and just as a single sun reflects as countless distinct suns across numerous rivers, lakes, and pools of water, so too does the one indivisible Brahman appear divided under various labels such as ‘you’, ‘I’, and ‘he’. In reality, no division has ever occurred; it appears fragmented solely due to the perceptual conditioning of the observer (the seer),” the sage revealed.

How Does Ignorance Bind the Individual Soul?

In truth, the individual soul (jiva) dwelling within the human body is inherently of the nature of Supreme Brahman. Yet, deluded by ignorance and the inexplicable veil of Maya, the jiva falls into misconception: “I am merely a finite jiva, I am separate, I am insignificant, and I am bound by karmas.”

Furthermore, the individual harbours deeply limiting notions within the mind, believing, “This perishable body of flesh and blood, with its limbs and organs, is my true self.” Through such false identifications, man becomes foolish and suffers ceaseless agony.

“Sri Rama! The primary purpose of the Upanishads and sacred scriptures expounding the Self is to dismantle this narrow limitation and awaken the jiva to its true, indivisible nature that transcends all cosmic constraints,” Vasistha affirmed.

How to Harness the Mind? The Analogy of Mosquitoes!

To dispel ignorance, Vasistha imparted a vital principle of living to Sri Rama.

“Therefore, Sri Rama, one must stabilize the mind—one’s eternal companion—through conscious personal effort (Purushartha). One must transition from fragmented perception (compartmental consciousness) to the all-encompassing realization of unity (comprehensive consciousness).

Dear Rama, observe the senses within you. They are relentlessly drawn to sensory gratification. Just as swarms of mosquitoes cluster hungrily over mud, these senses fixate incessantly on external pleasures.

How can they be restrained? They can be mastered and brought under sensory restraint solely through deliberate human effort (Purusha Prayatna). Unless one turns the mind toward universal equanimity or deep absorption (samadhi), the inherent sorrows and afflictions haunting the individual soul will never dissolve,” the sage guided.

Inquiry into the Self – The Greatness of the Discourse on Liberation

Vasistha proclaimed before the court that they were about to enter a profound inquiry—one endowed with supreme wisdom, spiritual fruitfulness, essence, and depth. He prayed that this inquiry into the true nature of the Self would guide all beings according to their spiritual readiness.

He delineated the remarkable fruits of this inquiry into liberation through profound reflections:

  • Through this inquiry, the soul realizes its inherent fullness here and now, while everyday life continues around it.
  • Grasping this truth unveils the mystery of birth and death, freeing the seeker forever from the debilitating cycle of recurring births and karmic entrapments.
  • Knowing this reality lifts one entirely above dualities such as joy and sorrow.
  • It reveals the serene state of equanimity attained when the restless mind is stilled.
  • It reveals the supreme treasure discovered upon penetrating the essence of all scriptural rituals and knowledge.
  • It reveals the divine experience of profound peace and supreme joy that dawns when all worldly latent tendencies are abandoned.
  • “We are now about to investigate the path to liberation, attaining which leaves nothing whatsoever left to be attained across this infinite cosmos,” Vasistha stated.

If one contemplates this extensive discourse on liberation alongside the wise, anyone, at any time, will undeniably attain the imperishable, sorrow-free state of ultimate liberation. Even meditating upon this teaching dissolves grief and bestows boundless peace of mind.

“This sacred discourse on liberation was originally expounded by Lord Brahma himself for the welfare of the cosmos. What he taught me at the dawn of creation, I now place before you,” Vasistha explained.

Sri Rama’s Inquiry: How Did You Receive This Knowledge?

Then, Sri Rama humbly asked Sage Vasistha: “O revered sage, to whom did Lord Brahma first impart this sacred teaching of liberation? Why did he reveal it? And how did you come to attain this supreme knowledge? It is best to dispel all doubts right from the beginning, which is why I ask. Please forgive my curiosity.”

Delighted by the inquiry, Sage Vasistha reassured him: “Dear Rama, whenever even the slightest doubt arises within you, ask without hesitation. Before we commence the core teachings, listen attentively as I recount how I received this inquiry into wisdom from Lord Brahma.”

The Order of Creation: The Emergence of Lord Brahma and the Grief of Beings

Prior to everything, there exists the singular Self (Atman)—indivisible across past, present, and future, and utterly imperishable. It is the primordial cause behind this entire play of Maya, serving as the inner witness and true reality of all entities.

The sages revere that foundational reality by various names: Chidakasha (the space of pure consciousness), Pratyak Chidrupa (the inner conscious essence), and the Pure Self. Expounded by the Vedas and Upanishads, this ineffable truth shines as the true self of every being.

Just as water remains unchanged whether waves rise or subside upon the ocean, the unconditioned Self remains steadfast and untouched, regardless of the workings of Maya.

The Creation of Lord Brahma: From that unconditioned Self, Lord Vishnu arose spontaneously, like a towering wave rising from the ocean. From the lotus of Lord Vishnu’s navel, Lord Brahma was born. Surrounded by gods and celestial sages, Lord Brahma resolved to create all living beings in this realm—much like the mind gives rise to diverse thoughts.

Yet, the beings brought forth by Lord Brahma’s resolve soon became afflicted by physical and mental ailments (adhi and vyadhi). Oscillating perpetually between thoughts of gain and loss, their agitated minds suffered immense agony. Immersed in sensory pleasures and bound by brief lifespans, they endured an unending succession of miseries.

Lord Brahma’s Compassion – The Creation of Five Disciplines

Witnessing the plight of these living beings—like a tender-hearted father grieving over his suffering children—the creator Lord Brahma felt deep compassion. “Alas! How can the miseries of these helpless, short-lived children of mine be alleviated?” he reflected deeply. To relieve human suffering, he instituted five noble disciplines:

  1. Tapas (Austerity / Meditation)
  2. Dharma (Righteous Conduct)
  3. Dana (Charity)
  4. Satya (Truthfulness)
  5. Tirtha (Sacred Pilgrimage)

After creating these five paths, he reflected further: “These five spiritual disciplines are commendable. Yet, can they eradicate the grief of my children at its very roots? No! To attain the state of Nirvana without rebirth (liberation), self-knowledge alone is the ultimate means.

Through austerity, righteousness, charity, truth, and pilgrimages, they will surely attain all desired worldly prosperities. Yet, that alone cannot grant supreme, unshakable peace. Wisdom alone can liberate the jiva from this ocean of samsara! Therefore, I shall devise a way to eradicate their ignorance entirely and bestow it upon humanity,” Lord Brahma resolved.

The Birth of Vasistha – Lord Brahma’s Strange Curse!

To bestow self-knowledge upon mankind, Lord Brahma made a supreme resolve. “He created me solely through the power of his thought,” Vasistha recounted. “Thus, I am the mind-born son of Brahma.

Just as a wave merges into another wave, born through the unmanifest power of Maya, I held a rosary and water-pot (kamandalu) in hand, approached my father Lord Brahma, and bowed down with deep devotion. He looked at me with a gentle smile, drew me close, and pronounced a strange boon—or rather, a curse:

“My son! May your mind become exceedingly restless like a monkey! May ignorance enter your agitated mind for a while,” Lord Brahma decreed.

The moment Lord Brahma uttered those words, I instantly forgot my pristine nature and lost my self-knowledge. As my intellect became clouded by dullness, I fell into deep sorrow and despair, just like a destitute wretch. “Alas! From where has this taint of worldly existence and all this suffering descended upon me?” I grieved intensely. No matter how much I contemplated, I could find no release from that agony.

Then, my father Lord Brahma approached me with immense love and spoke comforting words: “My son, why do you grieve within yourself without cause? Why do you not ask me, your father standing before you, for the remedy to this suffering? Ask, and I shall explain the proper means in detail!”

The Father’s Teaching – Vasistha Attains Self-Knowledge!

Seated beside him like one enveloped in delusion, I asked in all humility: “Father, how does the individual soul become trapped in this sorrowful samsara? And how can this helpless, suffering soul break free and attain liberation?”

He then imparted the comprehensive wisdom of truth to me. Imbibing that nectar-like teaching with absolute dedication, I attained pristine clarity and became firmly established in supreme wisdom, transcending even my creator. I realized completely that which makes human life fruitful and supremely pure,” Vasistha told Sri Rama.

Having restored my true nature and established my oneness with the Supreme through Lord Brahma’s guidance, my father spoke to me thus:

“O beloved son! You have now experienced firsthand the terrible suffering a soul undergoes under the sway of ignorance. All the creatures in my creation are similarly trapped in delusion and grief, tossed repeatedly through cycles of birth and death. The singular remedy for their affliction is this indivisible wisdom I have just revealed to you.

In order that this knowledge may benefit all strata of society, I deliberately cursed you to experience delusion, so that you would understand their suffering intimately. Through our dialogue, you have now attained supreme wisdom. Go forth to the mortal realm (Bhuloka) to grace humanity, just as I have graced you:

  • To those inclined toward worldly action, instruct the path of ritual action (Kriya Kanda).
  • To the wise endowed with dispassion who yearn for liberation, impart the bliss-bestowing path of knowledge (Jnana),” Lord Brahma revealed.

Vasistha’s Descent to Earth – Conclusion

Commissioned thus by him, I traveled through the celestial path and arrived here in Bharatavarsha on the continent of Jambudvipa. I shall remain here as long as there are worthy seekers on earth ready to receive this self-knowledge. I have no other personal duty remaining. Yet, I continue to perform whatever actions arise naturally before me, completely free from the sense of ego,” Sage Vasistha revealed.

“O Sri Rama! Having found an exemplary disciple like you—destined for cosmic welfare and worthy of receiving this wisdom—brings me immense joy. Taking you as the noble instrument, I am prepared to distribute this nectar of wisdom to all the worlds.

Now you know my origin, how wisdom descended to this mortal realm, and the grand vision shared by my father Lord Brahma and myself. It is owing to your immense virtues from past lives that your heart yearns so deeply to hear this supreme wisdom that grants the bliss of the Self. May this auspicious moment bestow welfare, peace, prosperity, and joy upon all the worlds!” Sage Vasistha concluded, blessing Sri Rama.
